Ever bit as stately as its counterparts, construction on this Italianate gem got underway in 1860 by cotton merchant Noble Hardee. He died before it was completed nearly a decade later. With its flaking stucco and rusting ironwork, the decaying grand dame of Monterey Square is believed to be the only unrestored mansion in the city. To see inside, all you need is a love for old things or a fondness for organized chaos. Each of the mansion’s four stories is now used to house Alex Raskin Antiques. First, the great majority of the urns were fitted with minimum “stock” bronze. Very few boasted the handcrafted, specially-made mercury gilded bronze mounts such as those featured here. Additionally, most urns created were approximately one quarter to half the size of these monumental beauties. It is assumed by most experts that the smaller examples were sold in retail establishments, while very rare large pieces were made only f...

Masterfully crafted, the majestic piece took 26 years and a team of 14 artists and sculptors to complete, and no attention to detail was spared. Corinthian columns, stepped arches, elaborate turrets, and urns lavishly adorn the amazing architectural work, which is truly the finest example of the cabinetmaker’s art. Nicholas II became Emperor in 1895, during a period of great political unrest. Prior to the Revolution of 1905, Nicholas moved his headquarters from the Winter Palace just south of St. Petersburg to Tsarskoye Selo, the summer home of the Tsars where he remained until the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. This armoire and a similar library cabinet eventually surfaced in the cargo of a freight-ship in Ghent, Belgium, in 1935. After the owner of the freight-ship passed away, both cabinets remained untouched until 1940 when they were seized by Ghent customs officials due to unpaid harbor charges. Created in 12 boxes, the two pieces were sold to a local cheese import/export firm who assembled the cabinets in a warehouse. The magnificent Russian cabinets were then publicly exhibited during World War II, drawing large crowds to see the “famous Russian cabinets.” Since the war, this cabinet has remained in the hands of private collectors, until now. The Winter Palace, one-time residence of the tsars and now the home of the Hermitage, is the most famous building of Imperial St. Petersburg. Tables and desks at Timothy Langston Fine Art & Antiques http://www.timothylangston.com/stock/furniture/tables-&-desks Swedish design: Light, gilded and very simple in form. This is what we think of when we consider Swedish furniture. Gustav III returned to Sweden from Versailles where he'd stayed at the court of Louis XVI and brought with him neoclassical design. He began to redesign the interiors palaces with a new pure form based upon classical forms from ancient Rome and Greece. A table such as this incorporates many of those classical elements: It's very architectural. You'll see at the top is like a lintel from a building with a cornice fish-scale motif running around here above beads with applied parmet motifs all in cast lead imitating bronze. This all sits above four very elaborately carved and turned legs. What is particularly nice is the combination of burnished water gilding and matt water gilding. These upper elements here are using a much drier gilding above these phenomenally bright reflective spheres. These in turn are articulated by ebonised parmets and then above a very very highly burnished giltwood key motif. The legs are turned and carved; again articulated with ebonised details these parmets here. It's very, very pleasing to look at because there's a very great deal of diversity in the actual surface decoration. These terminate in a plinth which is faux marble, so painted to look like an exotic rare Italian marble, and in the centre there is a finial which is essentially a stylised artichoke. The table really needs something there in the middle it's quite nice of that there because it actually enhances what would otherwise be a very open space. A table such as this would have been made to accommodate a single object perhaps a porphyry urn, a piece of porcelain or maybe a single candelabrum. Sweden is a dark country during the winter months and pieces like this, certainly, would have held a light giving objects for the the darker time of the year. It has form, it has architectural integrity. It has tremendously fine ornament throughout. It's an eye-catching piece which could be used practically - but also as an eye catcher in any interior setting. Simple, handsome and refined. This extraordinary mahogany and mercury-gilded bronze bedroom suite was once owned by the last Egyptian monarch, King Farouk. Luxuriously decorated in the Empire style, this important set was crafted by one of the premier Parisian ébénistes of the 19th century, Antoine Krieger (fl. 1826-1856). The seven piece suite comprises a queen-size bed, secrétaire à abattant (drop-front secretary) with a satinwood interior, cheval mirror with side tables, two-door cabinet, vanity and two nightstands. The abattant, tables of the cheval mirror, cabinet and nightstands are all fitted with beautiful green marble tops. Each piece is phenomenal and was crafted with extraordinary expertise. Most notably are the superior bronze mounts. Inspired by the style created to glorify the Emperor Napoleon, the decorative Empire elements radiate royalty, power and elegance. Bronze legs of winged creatures support the vanity and nightstand while the secretary and cabinet rest on large, bronze paw feet. Urns, swags, and a variety of mythological creatures were all cast and gilded to the finest degree. Antoine Krieger took his inspiration for this set from the furnishings of Malmaison, one of Napoleon and Josephine's Parisian palaces. A similar bedroom suite was acquired by circus magnate John Ringling to adorn his bedroom at Ca d'Zan, now part of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Item # 29-5791

Savannah’s Historic District is filled with dignified, lovingly-restored mansions which can be toured for a price. The Noble Hardee House overlooking Monterey Square is not one of them. Visitors enter through the cellar on Bull Street and must be willing to navigate a labyrinth of unique furniture pieces from the 1700s and 1800s. In some rooms, tables and chairs are precariously stacked to the ceiling. On the home’s main floor, the grand staircase competes for attention with the large book cases that almost block the front door. Meandering through the rooms with their large fireplaces, unbalanced chandeliers, and sweeping archways will leave you wondering what life was like for the families who lived there so long ago. Item 30-1803  These majestic bronze-mounted Sèvres porcelain urns are monumental in both size and quality, and feature the renowned manufactory’s signature deep cobalt blue glaze. Sèvres urns were made in various sizes and qualities over the years, with the finest examples dating from between 1850 and 1880. Yet even among the best examples, these urns stand apart. First, the great majority of the urns were fitted with minimum “stock” bronze. Very few boasted the handcrafted, specially-made mercury gilded bronze mounts such as those featured here. Additionally, most urns created were approximately one quarter to half the size of these monumental beauties. It is assumed by most experts that the smaller examples were sold in retail establishments, while very rare large pieces were made only for special commissions for elite clientele, earning them the moniker “palace urns”. Designed in the exuberant Rococo style, these baluster-form urns display hand painted panels depicting figures from Greek mythology, including Poseidon and Aphrodite, in idealistic scenes surrounded by cherubs on the front, while remarkably rendered landscapes of Greek ruins adorn the reverse. The urns’ exceptional artistry extends to the magnificent bronze ormolu mounts, on which putti support scrolling branches at the handles. Resting atop Neoclassical pillars, these urns embody the singular aesthetic of Sèvres prized porcelain. The vases bear the signature "A. Nicolas" within each painted scene. Circa 1860

China Red Sandalwood Museum is specialized in making and exhibiting excellent replicated furniture that was kept in the Palace Museum. There are mainly two wood materials that are used to make the furniture, namely, red sandalwood and Helimu. In fact, the furniture industry came into being in the Song and Yuan dynasties and fully developed since Ming Dynasty. The chairs in Ming dynasty can be categorized into three types; armchair, round-backed chair, official hat armchair and they all adopted Heliwu wood. But in the Qing Dynasty, it was gradually replaced by Red Sandalwood. And the reasons are to be revealed in the next episode of this program. The reasons why Heliwu wood became popular are as follows: 1) Deforestation of red sandalwood in the Ming Dynasty and the long growth cycle of it. 2) The introduction of glasses from Europe. Compared with the furniture in Ming Dynasty, the furniture in Qing greatly changed in its design and enrichment of decorations. It is an improvement and it is a millstone in furniture-making skills. Even today, the furniture exhibited is of great value to us.
